Blood Sugar, Weight and Energy: Take Control Before Diabetes Takes Over

Have you noticed your weight slowly creeping up over the years? Or maybe you feel tired all the time, even when you get enough sleep. It is easy to ignore these signs and hope they go away. But for many people, these are early indicators that their blood sugar levels are out of balance.

You might not think you are someone who could develop type 2 diabetes. But many of my clients are shocked to find themselves diagnosed with prediabetes or worse. It can happen silently, and by the time you notice, the effects may already be interfering with your health and energy.

Getting your blood sugar checked is a smart first step. Once you know your numbers, you can act and make meaningful changes. And the good news is that with the right diet and lifestyle, you can improve your results, lose weight, and feel better in every way. In some cases, it is even possible to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Could This Be You?

One in six people over 40 now has diabetes. Many more are in the grey area of prediabetes. That means blood sugar levels are raised but not yet high enough for a full diabetes diagnosis.

The risks linked to diabetes are serious: higher chances of stroke, heart disease, eye issues, high blood pressure, infections, nerve damage and ongoing fatigue. But the earlier you take control, the better your outcome.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) levels are too high. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. But type 2 diabetes, which makes up over 90 percent of cases, happens when your body still makes insulin but does not use it properly. This is known as insulin resistance.

Unlike type 1, type 2 is strongly influenced by diet and lifestyle. That means there is a lot you can do to manage or even reverse it.

How Do You Know If You Have It?

You can be tested through your GP or privately. The most common tests include:

  • Fasting blood glucose (FBG)
  • HbA1c (average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months)
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

Here is what the numbers mean:

  • Diabetes: FBG over 7 mmol/L, HbA1c over 6.4%, OGTT over 11.1 mmol/L
  • Prediabetes: FBG between 5.5 and 7 mmol/L, HbA1c 6.0-6.4%, OGTT 7.8-11.1 mmol/L

Common Signs of Unstable Blood Sugar:

  • Low energy, even after rest
  • Weight gain, especially around the middle
  • Carvings and constant hunger
  • Brain fog or poor focus
  • Trouble sleeping

Risk Factors to Watch For:

  • Carrying extra weight around the middle
  • A family history of diabetes
  • High blood pressure or low HDL cholesterol
  • Being over age 40
  • Having a large baby (over 9 pounds)

What You Can Do Now

Struggling with low energy, weight gain, or cravings? Discover how blood sugar imbalance may be to blame—and how Hampstead Nutrition Practice can help you prevent or even reverse type 2 diabetes with a personalized nutrition plan.

Many of my clients have been told to just lose a bit of weight and follow the standard dietary advice. But often, this simply does not work. I have seen many people given advice that does not help or even makes things worse.

The good news? You do not need to starve yourself or live off bland diet food. We focus on real, satisfying meals that help bring your blood sugar back into balance and reduce cravings. And the approach is based on what works for your body, your lifestyle, and your food preferences.

  • You have been told your blood sugar is “borderline”

  • You are tired of generic advice that does not work
